In order to support the professional exchange in control and automation technology far beyond the borders of our university, some years ago a colloquium series with the name “Contributions to Control Systems” was brought into being at the Institute of Automatic Control. Speakers from industry and research talk about their work in relevant developments and applications in the field of automatic control.

Control Allocation – Methoden zur Regelung von Systemen mit redundanter Aktuatorik

Abstrakt:

Um höchsten Anforderungen hinsichtlich Zuverlässigkeit, Fehlertoleranz und Leistungsfähigkeit ent-sprechen zu können, werden technische Systeme in zahlreichen Anwendungsgebieten (z.B. Luftfahrt) mit einem Überschuss an Aktuatoren ausgestattet. Im fehlerfreien Betrieb ist es aufgrund der redun-danten Aktuatorik möglich das Systemverhalten mit unterschiedlichen Aktuatoreingriffen auf ein und dieselbe Art und Weise zu beeinflussen. Der Einsatz von Regelungskonzepten mit sogenannter Con-trol Allocation stellt eine Methode dar, um dieser Problemstellung zu begegnen.
Der Vortrag geht zunächst auf mögliche Anwendungsbereiche dieser Technik ein und gibt anschlie-ßend einen Überblick über einige der zur Verfügung stehende Algorithmen. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf Methoden basierend auf Pseudoinversen und Quadratischer Programmierung. Abschließend wird der Einsatz der Verfahren zur Lageregelung eines Quadrotors demonstriert.

Optimization of Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles

Abstrakt:

This presentation introduces a comprehensive framework for the optimization of fuel cell hybrid vehicles, including the optimization of hybrid strategy, plant design and topology design. Three energy storage systems, corresponding to three topologies, are considered, i.e., battery, supercapacitor, and battery/supercapacitor. The hybrid strategy global off-line optimization is first investigated by comparing two algorithms: Dynamic Programming and Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle. Real-time hybrid strategies are then proposed and optimized using multi-objective Genetic Algorithm. The plant design optimization targets the minimization of hydrogen consumption and plant cost while considering battery aging. Results from experimental validation on small-scale test bench are also presented.

Abstrakt:

Voith-Schiffsantriebe unterscheiden sich grundsätzlich von klassischen Schraubenpropellern und bieten neue Möglichkeiten zur dynamischen Positionierung von Schiffen (DP) sowie zur geregelten Reduzierung von Rollbewegungen.

Im Vortrag wird zunächst die Technik und Physik der Voith Schiffantriebe vorgestellt. Dann werden neuste Forschungsergebnisse erläutert, die auf Basis von Modellversuchen, numerischen Simulationen im Zeitbereich und der Auswertung von realen Schiffsbewegungen vergleichend zeigen, welche Vorteile Voith-Schiffsantriebe bieten.

An Electro-Mechanical Actuator With Hydrostatic Drive For Subsea Trees To Reduce CAPEX And OPEX With Higher Reliability And Safety Levels

Abstrakt:

Although subsea production is already a mature technology, a high engineering effort is currently needed to “industrialize” the applied systems for cost optimization. The drive system applied for the actuation of subsea valves in trees and manifolds reflects exactly this challenge: how to reduce manufacturing costs by increasing safety and availability?
The first approach was based on hydraulic cylinders, which were operated by electric-piloted hydraulic subsea valves with topside Hydraulic Power Units. This system is very robust, but leads to very cost-intensive umbilicals to provide the needed fluid power and prevent environmental damages due to leakage of hydraulic fluid into the sea.
To reduce environmental pollution, complexity and costs; all-electric solutions were developed. However, hydraulic actuators continue to be used because of important benefits such as high power-density, lower friction and integration of a mechanical override.
Is it possible to create a hybrid solution which can combine the benefits of both technologies? In other industries, this dilemma was solved by integrating the hydraulic cylinder into a self-contained electro-hydraulic servo axis, which applies pumps driven by variable-speed motors for accurate positioning.
This presentation deals with the results of the development of an electro-mechanical actuator with hydrostatic drive to operate gate valves of subsea trees and manifolds.
The main achievements, demonstrated by simulation and testing using a 2” valve actuator at 3,000 m water depth, are:
1. Cost-effective modular design using industrial components
2. Environmentally friendly set up
3. Lower power consumption
4. High availability and condition monitoring
5. Functional safety able to achieve SIL 3
6. Integration of mechanical override
7. Advanced Electric Controls with Industry 4.0 connectivity
This system is an important step to close the technology gap to accomplish the all-subsea factory. Especially, it can be applied in cases where the hydraulic actuators are still preferred instead of all-electric actuators.
